AUSTIN (KXAN) — With the rolling average of new hospitalizations bouncing between 16 and 20 for nearly three weeks, health officials are set to give an update and answer questions about the local COVID-19 response at 10 a.m. Friday.
Dr. Mark Escott, Austin Public Health's interim health authority, said there's a chance the area could get to Stage 2 risk levels, meaning the average moves below 10, by the first week of May if people continue to wear masks and social distance.
APH followed the federal government's lead and paused the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine due to the risk, albeit very small, of severe blood clots. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was scheduled to meet Wednesday to start going over data and begin to draft recommendations. Escott said until that process is complete, APH won't use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
